At this time of year, humans think the fairies are spying on children to see if they’re being naughty. I’m not supposed to tell you this, but the fairies have far more important things to do in midwinter than dob naughty children in to Santa so they don’t get presents. They are busy protecting Nature from the elements while she sleeps and conserves her energy for the coming year.
On the day of the Solstice, Nature pauses between breaths and the world is held in a magical stillness. There might be a howling gale outside, and driving rain or even snow, but we dogs can sense the stillness underneath it all. The world might look dead, but there’s intense power in this stillness – it contains the seeds of the coming spring.
Not many humans notice this subtle Solstice magic because they’re too busy answering the demands of that shouting screen in the living room that wants them to HURRY UP AND BUY STUFF BEFORE IT’S ALL GONE. Children notice the magic, of course, but they tend to associate it with presents and Father Christmas. And what is it that actually determines whether he brings them the stuff they want? Well, we’ve heard an ugly rumour concerning Santa – according to Annabelle, the goodies go to children whose parents who can afford to finance his luxury holidays in the sun.
NB – Pearl and I hereby notify Santa Claus that the above comments do not reflect the views of the management. We realise this is just a rumour, and we very much hope we will get our usual goodies under the tree on Christmas Day.
WISHING YOU ALL A MAGICAL SOLSTICE, A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR
I like midwinter theory. Hope your Christmas is filled with lots of fun and yummy goodies. Merry Christmas to you, Pearl and Annabelle too! Cheers, Bloggy Cat ◠ᴥ◠

Bones are good. We also like sausages and rawhide chews. Let’s hope Santa’s listening and remembers us dogs on the day.

Tis the season for dogs and humans alike! I know mine will be looking forward to the annual strange wrapped cardboard box with treats inside. Problem is, after the years of learning to unwrap presents, now they can open the door to the backyard as well.

At least they can let themselves out when nature calls!

Chancy and Pooh say they this better not be true, but if it is…Santa needs to end his time in the sun soon and get down to business, Christmas will soon be here and they want to see some presents.

Fear not, Chancy and Pooh – Santa doesn’t go on his holiday until the New Year, when all the work is done.

Yes, we adult humans are often too rattled at Christmas to notice the subtle magic around us. Such a shame. But hopefully we take some time out of our frenzy to enjoy the moment. I hope you had a nice holiday!
