Why You Should Never Buy from a Puppy Farm

I don’t normally post twice in a week, but a couple of days ago we came across a very sad story and it’s been bugging me like a burrowing tick.

It’s about a little dog called Rosie who was born on a puppy farm where far too many dogs were kept in dirty and overcrowded conditions.  She had terrible health problems, but somehow she managed to survive until the puppy farm was raided and the dogs rescued – she must have been a real little fighter.  You can read her story here.

I thought I had a bad start – my four brothers and I spent the first 9 weeks of our lives in the back of a transit van – but I can’t imagine what it must have been like for Rosie in that place.  So please, however much you want a puppy, don’t buy one from a puppy farm.  You’ll only add to the problem and more than likely end up with a dog who isn’t very well.

If you buy a dog from a pet shop, or one you’ve seen advertised in a newspaper or online, it could well have come from a puppy farm.  Your safest bet is to adopt from a rescue shelter. They have dogs and puppies of all shapes and sizes, especially after Christmas when the shelters are overflowing with dogs who’ve been given as presents.  It’s hard to believe, but there are still humans who give dogs and puppies for Christmas – like we’re toys! – and some humans have a nasty habit of throwing out their Christmas presents when the novelty wears off.

If you adopt from a reputable shelter, you’ll be helping a dog who needs a loving home, and the humans who run the shelter will make sure you get the right dog for you.  Who knows – if you’re really lucky, you might even end up with a dog like me!
